REDISCOVERED: Producer Bill Laswell, who worked with Herbie Hancock during his exploratory funk-metal days of “RockIt” and Future Shock/Sound-System/Perfect Machine, was working for reggae masters Sly & Robbie in 1991 and, before they knew it, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell of Funkadelic were involved—plus Herbie himself, Henry Threadgill, the horn section for Parliament/Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band, and others—and the project took on a life of its own.
Check out this reworking of Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop” by this amalgamation of artists under the name Material featuring vocalist Gary Shider. This track just simmers in an ethereal swirl of flavor.
